Design Process

I am actually having the hardest time on this compact disc cover. I checked Kevin's blog to see what he wrote and then he used the word "vernacular" and I was like "yes... this is out of my league" and just stopped.
My design process is pretty much that of any lazy, excessive eating, graphic design student. To show the world a glimpse of my design process I will review my day.

11:55am: Wake up
11:56am - 12:00pm: Take morning poop and brush teeth
12:01pm: Get myself pumped to do homework all day
12:02pm - 1pm: Excitement for homework lowers and instead I watch 30 Rock while eating Raisin Bran
1:01 - 1:04pm: The hunt for the handouts
1:05pm - 1:42pm: Lose hope on trying to find the handouts and go buy groceries
1:43pm - 2:43pm: Cook food
2:44pm - 3:00pm: Eat food
3:01pm - 6:00pm: Nap time
6:01pm - 6:15pm: Eat more food
6:16pm - 6:30pm: Clean room while trying to look for handouts
6:31pm - 7:00pm: Read PizzaPizza nutrition charts in amazement of how much of a fatass I am
7:00pm - 8:00pm: Get distracted by Infomation Design homework and completely forget about the CD case.
8:00pm - 10:00pm: Sit around and do nothing
10:00pm - 1:30am: Start working on the CD case at a mild pace
1:31am - present time: Write blog

This schedule isn't too accurate, there should be alot more eating in there.
As you can see, it does take me a while to get my brain in order and get down to business. But in the words of a wise Testudine, "Slow and steady wins the race."

p.s.
Yeah, you like... "Testudine"
I can use big words too

The Dan Ko Project

Today in Contemporary Design Theory we were given an assignment to track our everyday usage of everything we do that relates to the media. Meanwhile in our Information Design Two class we were given an assignment to visually show our emotions throughout a particular day. I was thinking I would mix these two assignments together and hand in one super assignment for both Heather and Johnny... But then I had an idea of mixing this already mixed assignment with a personal project of mine, Project: Get Jacked.

So what will happen is...
By the end of the project I will have a fully detailed map of how I live my life, in both written and visual form. I will then compare the notes with my rock hard body to see if there were any relations between my daily routine, and the shape my body has formed.

Why am I doing this?
• To masterfully finish three projects in one
• To fulfill my 2009 resolution to get fit
• To publically humiliate myself OR to prove everyone who doubted me AKA Jason Jung

Who am I?

In the context of creativity and design, I am an octopus.
I may not be the smartest, or the coolest, or the best looking.
But I've been told I'm weird and unique.
I eat, sleep and breathe in a sea of ideas, and dance my way around in a way the straight-forward thinkers envy.
My mind is in eight different places at once, trying to grab hold of any idea that may pass me.
It is very easy for me to get stuck on an idea, and once I am stuck it is very hard for me to let go.
I examine things using all of my senses, my nerves were built for that exact purpose.
I can blend into the scenery to appear as if I am nothing special, but then jump out and surprise you.

Who am I? I'm an octopi.

Post Update 26/01/2009: I thought we were only supposed to comment on the last part of the sheet not the whole thing. This post only comments on the last question.

Be Heard, Not In a Herd

"We don't grow into creativity, we grow out of it or educated out of it"
-Ken Robinson

At an early age we are taught that the arts are not the way to go. We should conform to the academic oriented portion of society to better this world with formulas and equations. But is that really the best answer? Is it so bad to be the Salmon who swims upstream? Or the sheep that runs astray from the herd. Well according to the education system, it is. We are meant to be a square peg in a square society. Fuck them.

Creativity is the greatest tool to change the world. A good idea can change the world, but if you don't have a voice no one will listen. A voice is meant to be heard, and I would prefer to be heard than be in a herd.

Carrot Mob
This is an example of an idea that can change the world.
Creativity at its best.

Design is...

My grade three teacher, whos name I cannot remember, made us do this art project. The project was to gather sticks, leaves, and other things found in the forest. We would then lay the gatherings onto a sheet of paper to create any picture we wanted. I made the greatest picture of a bird, and everyone else's looked like shit. It was around then I realized Mathematics, Science, and English would be useless knowledge for my future in the arts.

Six years passed.
I was in grade nine, and I pretty much made nothing artistic since that grade two bird. I couldn't draw anything, not even cocks. I had this art teacher Ms. Carroza. She failed me with a forty-five percent, but the class was pretty cool so I took it again, and every year until grade twelve. While I was in grade twelve I didn't know what to do with my life after high school, luckily I didn't have enough credits to graduate so I had another year to think. I did a co-op placement at this print shop that was so far from my house it was a joke, actually, it was near Artur's house. I met the nicest people there, they taught me alot of stuff about printing and computers. So there it was, confirmation to myself that graphic design was the path my life would take. Humber accepted me the following spring. I still remember the interview for Humber. I caught a peek at this girls portfolio and it was so good, I wanted to knock her out and just steal it. The worst part was the interview itself though, Heather, I'm sure you rememeber (stink eye).

School has changed my views on what design actually is. The more I do the more I realize the importance of design in my work. Design is for solving a problem, and then using the results to blow the human mind again and again until it explodes from amazement overload. That's what's important to me, the explosion. The explosion can do many things, it can inspire, it can cause realization, it can connect, it can create feelings, but most of all, it can excite. These moments don't come too often, so they aren't to be squandered.

My dreams for the future are tied to my thoughts of the power of design. One day I hope to start my own magazine, and great design can manipulate the masses, it can communicate to who it needs to and deliver a message to zombify them bit by bit.

Anyone can be designer, anyone with the urge to disturb the norm, or anyone wanting to create something so creative it makes their head explode.
